Background

More than 5 million people die worldwide from trauma. Oxygen is a very common treatment for trauma patients; however, it may be harmful.

Purpose

We want to investigate the basic mechanisms for the potential harmful effects of oxygen to improve the treatment of trauma patients.

Method

All four helicopters from the Danish Air Ambulance participate in the TRAUMOX2 study (www.traumox2.org). In TRAUMOX2, the emergency physician randomises the trauma patients prehospitally to a liberal or restrictive oxygen treatment eight hours from trauma. This biomarker study will consist of 120 of these trauma patients that are transported to Rigshospitalet. During admission the patients will have four blood samples obtained in 48 hours to investigate biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Cooperation

The study is a cooperation between the Department of Anaesthesia at Rigshospitalet and the Danish Air Ambulance
