Nebulized Tranexamic acid for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage – a randomized controlled trial
Background
This trial aims to stop bleeding after removal of tonsils (tonsillectomy) in children and adults. Approximately 7000 patients have their tonsils removed each year in Denmark and 95% of these patients are released from the hospital the same day. There is a risk of bleeding in the first ten days after surgery and the incidence is around 5%. Bleeding in the airway is a life threatening complication and general anesthesia can be challenging.
Purpose
With this project, we plan to use prehospital intervention with nebulized medicine to minimize surgical intervention that can be dangerous and is often uncomfortable for the patients.
Collaboration
The trial will be performed in collaboration with otorhinolaryngology, anesthesiology and emergency medical service in Denmark. The project will originate from Zealand University where a working group with representations from each department has been formed.
