Voluntary first responders in the emergency medical system in Southern Denmark
Background and purpose
Initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation before ambulance arrival and early defibrillation increase survival chances. Thus, programs engaging volunteer first responders have been established, primarily in areas with long response times. However, these programs involve a complex interplay between professionals and non-professional actors without formal training, and the perspectives of the various actors on volunteer first responders are sparsely investigated.
Method
Via qualitative interviews and focus groups, we aim to investigate perspectives of stakeholders involved in first responder programs in the Region of Southern Denmark to gain insight into opportunities and challenges among the various actors. The project will propose improvements to existing first responder programs, thereby ensuring their sustainability and better emergency care for the region’s citizens.
Collaboration
The project is conducted between researchers from Region of Southern Denmark, Capital Region, Ambulance South, and experts in qualitative interviews and philosophy from University of Southern Denmark.
